Composite repairs to ISO 24817: permanent or interim?

Composite wraps are recognised as a permanent solution — when correctly designed. What ISO 24817 actually requires.

Composite repairs using fibre-reinforced wraps have been recognised as a permanent repair since the first edition of ISO 24817 (2017, now 2017 + Amd 1:2020) — provided the design follows the standard.

Three repair classes

  • Class 1: Corrosion without leak. Standard application, long service life.
  • Class 2: Active leak. Wrap + sealant, immediate seal.
  • Class 3: Structural defects (cracks, thin spots). Designed as a load-carrying component.

Design inputs

ISO 24817 requires: current wall thickness (UT), residual pressure, fluid data, expected life (5–20 years), wrap-system fibre and matrix data.

Practical tip

HSOS recommends a supplementary FFS assessment per API 579 — many client specifications require it explicitly.
