Field Joint Coating of Welds on a Buried Gas Pipeline

In March 2026, HSOS Industrial Services completed field joint coating works on a buried gas pipeline in central Germany, carried out by individually DVGW-15 certified technicians to ensure long-term corrosion protection and cathodic protection compatibility.

Project Overview

In March 2026, HSOS Industrial Services performed field joint coating of weld seams on a buried gas pipeline in central Germany. The primary objectives were to restore the full corrosion protection barrier at the weld zones and to maintain the integrity of the cathodic protection (CP) system.

Why Field Joint Coating?

During pipeline construction and welding, the factory-applied coating is inevitably removed or damaged in the weld area. Without a continuous external coating, buried pipelines are permanently exposed to electrochemical corrosion. Coating defects also impair the efficiency of the cathodic protection system, significantly increasing the current demand required to protect the structure.

Application and Materials

For this project, our technicians applied an innovative field joint coating product specifically developed for buried gas pipeline applications. The system provides:

  • Excellent adhesion to prepared steel and the adjacent factory coating
  • High dielectric strength – critical for effective cathodic protection
  • Resistance to soil moisture, temperature cycling, and mechanical loading during backfilling
  • Compliant application in accordance with DVGW technical codes

Certified Personnel

Proper execution requires qualified personnel. The HSOS technicians deployed on this project hold individual certifications under DVGW-15 – the relevant qualification standard for personnel performing coating works on gas and water pipelines. This certification is issued on a personal basis, confirming each technician's demonstrated competence.

Outcome

Following completion of the coating works, the pipeline was successfully backfilled. The client confirmed full satisfaction with both the quality of execution and adherence to schedule. All weld zones are now fully integrated into the cathodic protection system and comply with the applicable requirements for corrosion protection of buried gas pipelines.
